It’s our wedding night, I went in to take my bath after the reception party. I am so tired, all I wanted to do was fall asleep but I heard voices in our bedroom. Stepped in and saw my almighty new mother –in –law lying on our matrimonial bed and my newly wedded hubby seated talking with her. I was shocked but remain calm, smiling as usual and walked into the living room. Some minutes later, the man I just married came into the living room with a pillow and bedsheet which he spread on the sofa, then lie down to sleep.
As if in a dreamlike dazed state, I asked him “do you want to sleep here?”
“Yes, he barked.
Really this must be a stranger, because I have never heard King speak in a such voice before now. I rubbed my eyes, maybe I have started daydreaming again. Mama always warned me that too much of this Novels will one day get me into trouble.
“Can’t you see I am tired and want to rest, he grumbled.
“I am too, but where do I sleep seeing, Golia or sorry your mum is on the bed.” I stammered.
“What did you just try to call my mum? He asked angrily under his breath.
“I didn’t call her anything but where do I sleep?” I ask tentatively the second time.
“On my head, he barked angrily and sighed.
This is world war brewing, I have just stepped into the lion’s den. This is no play or gain. Rina girl, don’t panic. You’ve got this girl, relax.
“But this is our wedding night.” I told him quietly
then a figure can into the living room limping, then spoke
“my son, help me. It’s like your new wife don’t want me here. I can go and get a cab to my sister’s house, if you would help me down” she said.
“what? No, mummy. You are going nowhere. Look Rina, you have to share the bed with my mum, if you can’t, then it’s the end of this marriage”. He screamed.
I opened my eyes wide in surprise as he pushed me aside to help Goliath back into the bedroom. As he supports her back, she turned back and smiled wickedly, as if to say, “I told you, be ready for what you get.” My younger sister’s warnings came back right there. It dawn on me that I was in for big war, in short I was in for big trouble. For how long I don’t know, all I could tell is that this is the beginning of what she told me
How did I get here, I must be thinking with my anus or my bottom not my head to have gotten involved with this woman and her family?
Yes, that’s it, that’s what mama tells us when we get into situations that are complicated or get into trouble that is big, big trouble. Because according to mama, no right-thinking person does stupid things.
Which now, as I think back to her words, I can see how correct it is.
How can a woman threaten and warned me about marrying her son and I went ahead? Even when others who knew her told me to back off.
Marriage is a school, no one graduates from. It’s for life, says who? Says my honourable people, for among the cardinal rules of my society not to be broken by a lady, is rule number (3) a lady must not get married and divorce. She is tag a prostitute and ostracized. Cardinal rule number (2) is a lady must not be single in life or she is termed an old married, a prostitute and ostracized that is why I got into this in the first place to avoid breaking rule number (2) because I was already a victim of rule number one.
