Just five days to Christmas and the festive mood is in the air, everyone is in full swing. Friends and family alike, it is the time to groove, so what comes with grooving, drinking of course and Like we all know, all over the world it is a time to sound the safety alarm.
Yes! the no drinking and driving alarm, “If you drink don’t drive or if you drive don’t drink”. This is just not for the safety of others alone but for your own safety or the safety of your love one or ones. You might just be carrying a precious bundle in the car with you, how about that?
Its no wonder these campaigns of safety is more intense at a time like this because many innocent lives have been lost through senseless accidents caused by drinking and driving that could have been averted by this simple instruction.
The other day, I heard in the News that Ontario in Canada had put in place firmer laws to deal with drivers caught driving after drinking. Stiffer laws and stiffer penalties, the Police have been given more authority in detecting a drunk driver.
Hmmm! good one I say, because everyone knows the Police in Countries like Canada would surely carry out this duty effectively. In short, the reporter and some commentators were scared that this was giving the Police too much right in performing the duty, not the fear that they wont perform their duty.
Hmmmmmm!, turn the spotlight round to my Africa, the reverse is the case. Many know how important it is not to drink and drive this time of the year because of bad, unsafe roads, plus the economic situation. Instead of the crime of drinking and driving being committed by the masses, it is those who are suppose to enforce safety laws who are breaking it.
What would one say of a road safety officer who is suppose to be on duty making sure motorist drive safely and are not drunk, being drunk himself. Different folks, different strokes. Hmmm! Don’t be surprise, he is in perfect control driving. Officer in charge- he is in charge of course. When he hits just like he did he comes out and show his badge and staggers, proving his authority over his victim.
Or the case of law enforcement officers (Policemen) who are to maintain peace among the people fighting, its not wrong in my world. They can fight and of course they have their weapons. If it discharges, fine case can start. Officer to officer. It is when a civilian is concern, then it is bloody civilian. Then it becomes accidental discharge and since it is accidental. Wooo it is accidental discharge and so the Police can get acquitted (Opariniyen)- hmmm! it is finished says my brother.
Case close, file disappear, end of story. No part two or three because it is not Nollywood movie, Nigerian or African movie. It is only in the movies it continues till you get to part ten but thank you end of story.
