Hey!everyone today is a special day and always being since I could remember growing up. Not just because it is two days to Christmas, but it is the birthday of someone very special to me-my big sister. My immediate elder sister, my protector while we were growing up, the one who always believed in me, the one whose beauty I admire so much, the great mischief maker. Yes how I recall all her mischieves but the one above all who believed that we can make it. A special lady, special person and a special sister.
Growing up, we never had the sibling fights or battles that others had not with her or with my youngest, her mischief gets me cracking up and gets her into our mums trouble but most times even mama can not help but laugh when she recounts some. I wish mama was around to see you today, she would have been proud of you, big sister.
Mischief maker number one, trouble shooter/maker/tomboy number one then. As I sat today, after wishing happy birthday on the phone I had flash back on some encounters of the past. Just could not help but crack up.
I hope you get to read this sister. I remembered years back I was still in primary school then, it was Christmas season and our brother was in Lagos. The previous Christmas wedge shoes were in vogue, my sister wanted one badly because she was already in high school but mama would hear nothing about it and bought us what she termed to be good shoes which annoyed my sister. Luckily, the next year now Mama asked her to write a letter to our big brother in Lagos and in the letter my sister told our brother to buy both of us wedge shoes.
Our brother honoured the request and bought us both good beautiful high ladies wedge shoes and they came as parcels in August , months before Christmas. My sister and I were so excited, of course mama was happy that she was not going get us shoes at Christmas time.
Unfortunately, in November when the shopping for Christmas began wedge was no longer in vogue. It was now flat shoes and sandals, I was so disappointed but knew that there was nothing to be done but my sister, of course went to mama to inform her we can’t put on the wedge because it was not in vogue. Mama looked at her and inform, we were going to put on the wedge whether we like it on not. Hmmm! but did my sister give up, no way she insisted she won’t and kept telling me she won’t.
A day to her birthday, which is three days to Christmas, mama asked us to bring the shoes out to clean them before Christmas, lo and behold no one knows if it is rat or what that ate the heels and my big sister leaped up with joy. Mama was not happy but we had news shoes the next day.
I was the quiet one, my sister would always fight the boys who tries to bully me. She was my protector, she always had my back. She shared everything with me, her clothes and made me feel wanted. This sister had my back growing up, and till date.
This sister thinks yours truly is smart and brilliant but she is the beauty and the brains, she taught me how to read, she thought me the love for books and novels. We travelled Europe, United states, the great Berlin in the second world war from the pages of novels together. We had such thrilling moments and dreamt of all great places, talking about them from out sleeping mats in the darkest of nights in our parents humble home then.
We dreamt and dreamt and dreamt, this big sister told me one night as I cried out of frustration of all we were going through, that we were late bloomers, but that one day we would bloom and all will see . Yes! indeed, I believed her and never stopped dreaming.
Though we have had so many challenges but your love has held us strong and this day I say ” Happy birthday to the world greatest sister. Your hands is always holding mine.
