Africans love home-made meals, cooking and preparing meals for our family is what we love doing. My mum used to say “a good meal is worth every effort one puts into its preparation” That preparation is not about the ingredients but the time and care, some one recently now added just one unique point that makes the meals so tasty and nourishing.
I love to cook like most African mums, I am not one for fast foods not even here in the Western world. Since I feed my family mostly home made meals especially African delicacies, I also share this with my friends from other Nationality.
One of my Canadian friends after watching me several times prepare meals and also eaten these meals, one day after a dinner of fried beans and fried ripe plantain(called dodo) commented that the key ingredient of every meal an African woman prepares is not the what she buys to prepare it but the love with which she does it.
This got me thinking, indeed she is right. Every meal is prepared for with care, making sure that everything necessary for that meal is included. The mum taste and make sure salt, pepper and other ingredients are the right amount.
She takes her time every step of the way in preparing a meal, there is no hurry in her way and she will be the last to cook what is not right or healthy for her family.
So when next you taste an African woman’s meal, know it that it is not about all the stuff she used but the time and love put into that meal which she enjoyed preparing.
